If you already have strong feelings about your Instagram feed featuring more and more reels from accounts you don't follow, you should wait until next year. According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, by the end of 2023, the company will have more than doubled the amount of content from suggested accounts that users view on Facebook and Instagram. According to him, such recommendations currently make up about 15% of the content on Facebook, and Instagram already has a bigger percentage.

The initiative is a radical departure from Facebook and Instagram's historical emphasis on showing posts from a user's social graph, or list of friends. Zuckerberg refers to it as building the "Discovery Engine." The change aims to compete with TikTok's extensive usage of AI to serve up videos from everywhere. Due to this strategy, TikTok has become one of the most popular apps in the world and has given rise to

In 2018, when Zuckerberg unveiled a strategy aimed at promoting "meaningful social interactions" (MSI) between friends in the News Feed, Facebook made its most significant change to the way it suggests content. Zuckerberg anticipated when it first came out that people would spend less time on the social network but feel better after using it.

He claimed at the time that "studies demonstrate that using social media to interact with people we care about can be helpful for our well-being." On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos might not be as beneficial, even if they are interesting or educational.

As Facebook's user base ages and Meta's revenue is slowing, Zuckerberg seems to be discarding the four years of design decisions made for the feed. He claimed on Wednesday that people were increasingly using private communications rather than sharing content in feeds.

"One social trend we're noticing is that most people locate fascinating information in their feeds and then message about it, rather than just commenting in comments on feeds,"

Al "finds new stuff that people find fascinating, and that enhances engagement and the quality of our feeds," according to Zuckerberg. He said that any publicly shared content on Meta's site, such as links and photographs, will be recommended using artificial intelligence (AI).

In reference to TikTok's exclusive concentration on short videos, he remarked, "In that sense, I think what we're doing is going to be really unique." People won't want to be limited to a single format, in my opinion.
