An unmanned aerial vehicle capable of bringing 5G service to a region with shaky communications has been created by American telecom giant AT&T.

The device, known as the 5G Flying COW (short for "Cell on Wings" or "a cell on the wings"), can reliably transmit and receive signals over an area of roughly 26 km2 while circling at a height of around 100 m.

Although there are numerous applications for such a drone, AT & T's first thought was to give first responders communications where it might be urgently required.

Modern drones' biggest flaw is their short battery life: while professional versions can typically fly for up to two hours, consumer-grade models seldom last longer than 40 minutes.
