Ivan Sutherland, Inventor and Developer of Interactive Computer Graphics, Celebrates His Birthday Today!

Ivan Sutherland invented and developed MIT's Sketchpad, which pioneered the field of interactive computer graphics. 


A display file for screen refresh, a recursively explored hierarchical structure for modelling graphical objects, recursive algorithms for geometric manipulations, and an object-oriented programming style were among Sketchpad's many breakthroughs. 


He was vice president and head scientist at Evans and Sutherland Computer Corporation when it was created in 1968


From 1976 to 1980, he was the chairman of Caltech's computer science department. 


He left Caltech in 1980 to form Sutherland, Sproull and Associates, a consulting firm. 


He also founded the venture capital business, Advanced Technology Ventures.
