Geely, owned by Chinese billionaire Li Shufu, has acquired Meizu, one of China's first smartphone manufacturers. This acquisition is expected to aid Geely in the development of cars with features that are connected to the power of mobile devices.

Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology finalised the acquisition of Meizu's 79 percent ownership. According to analysts, Geely, which also controls Volvo and a portion of Mercedes-Benz Group, views the acquisition primarily as a way to ingest technology for contemporary automobiles. They point out that Meizu employs Flyme, a customisable Android operating system that enables smartphone users to install non-Android apps.

According to Yang Wang, senior research analyst at Counterpoint Research based in London, "by purchasing the entirety of Meizu, Geely would have access to Meizu's Android-based operating system, the Flyme OS, which can help Geely gain a front-row seat in key insights on the viability of intelligent and autonomous driving."
