In order to eliminate "less secure applications," Google has started to ban connections from third-party email clients to its email service.
Prior to this restriction, you could sign into a third-party email client using your primary Google email address and password, which lessened the security of your Google account as a whole.
You can now use Google in third-party apps, but those apps need to support "OAuth2" (a method of authentication that opens a dialog box allowing you to authenticate by logging into Google and granting the app access to your Google account) or the user needs to enter a certain app-specific password.
