By 2024, Amazon will reportedly have exhausted all domestic hiring options for warehouse staff.
It is therefore not shocking that Amazon is now placing a wager on robots. Proteus, a new robotic worker model, is expected to cause something of a revolution by becoming the first autonomous robot that can operate freely in the same space as people.
The Proteus robot was developed to address this issue, and its designers claim that it is completely safe for people. In order to do this, functionality has to be sacrificed; the robot can only carry GoCarts, which are large, heavy cargo cells, slowly.
In order to avoid a collision, Proteus projects a bright green light beam in front of it that is plainly visible in any light. If a person passes through the beam, the robot stops right away.
