One of the most significant tech mergers in history is poised to take place, and it includes two businesses you may have never heard of.

Broadcom, the world's largest semiconductor business, is scheduled to buy VMware, a cloud computing startup, for $61 billion in cash and stock.

Only two prior acquisitions in the computer industry have been larger: Dell's $67 billion purchase of data storage business EMC in 2015 and Microsoft's $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, which is still in the works.

Shareholders would receive $142.50 in cash or 0.252 Broadcom stock for each VMware share under the terms of the deal.

Broadcom has benefited from the global semiconductor deficit.
