Despite the NEC meeting, CLOGSAG will continue its statewide strike

After a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), decided to continue its nationwide strike.

The decision was made in spite of a request for the strike to be called off made by Mr. Abdul-Rashid H. Pelpuo, Minister of Labor, Jobs, and Employment.

Speaking to the media following the meeting, CLOGSAG Executive Secretary Mr. Isaac Bampoe Addo stated that the NEC unanimously chose to continue the strike, pointing to the lack of a concrete plan to address the issue.

CLOGSAG has been opposing Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway's appointment as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, claiming that the role ought to be politically impartial.

The National Executive Council of CLOGSAG convened on Saturday, February 22, 2025, to discuss a request from the Minister of Labor, Jobs, and Employment to halt the current strike by CLOGSAG members.

"The NEC unanimously agreed after considering the request that the strike should go on and that Mr. Abdul-Rashid H. Pelpuo's request lacked a plan for resolving the issue," Mr. Bampoe Addo stated.

"That it would not be fair for politically exposed people to be appointed into the Civil Service and the Local Government Service as long as all of them are sanctioned and eventually have their appointments terminated."

CLOGSAG maintains that its members will not resume work until the government resolves its issues, even though the strike has affected administrative services across the country.

The Local Governance Service Workers’ Union (LGSWU), a section within CLOGSAG, has withdrawn from the strike, indicating internal conflicts within the organization.

The LGSWU reaffirmed its position in a statement released on Friday, saying that it will not be taking part in the strike because of an ongoing legal action pertaining to the subject.

"The Local Government Service Workers' Union has unanimously decided not to join the strike action due to these reasons and after additional consultations with all regional councils by the National Management Committee," the statement stated.

As a result, the union has instructed its members to go on with their regular job.

CLOGSAG has been asked by the government to change its mind and resume operations.

Additionally, it has reaffirmed its readiness to work with the Association's leadership to break the deadlock.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, made the request.

"We would urge CLOGSAG to revoke its decision to go on strike because we think the President made the right choice in appointing Mr. Adom Botchway."
