Asawase Bombey locals complain about inadequate sanitation and worry about a cholera epidemic

As the rainy season approaches, residents of Bombey, an Ashanti Region suburb of Asawase, are extremely concerned about the deteriorating sanitary situation in their neighborhood and fear a possible cholera epidemic.

The area's main gutters are severely clogged with trash, especially plastics, which results in standing water that attracts mosquitoes and gives off an unpleasant odor.

According to the locals, the drainage system is totally obstructed because the last desilting operation was done more than ten years ago.

The public's outrage over Asawase's sanitation problems is not new.

Residents of the Sawaba and Aboabo neighborhoods protested similar issues in April 2023, claiming that garbage disposal was being neglected by the local government.

Little has been done to remedy the deteriorating situation in spite of many concerns.

Residents of Asawase Bombey are particularly concerned because Ghana is now dealing with a cholera outbreak.

Over 6,000 cholera infections and 40 fatalities have now been reported statewide by the Ghana Health Service (GHS), with inadequate sanitation being the main contributing factor.

Before the situation worsens into a serious health emergency, local officials are being urged by the community to act quickly to clean the gutters, enforce appropriate trash disposal, and enhance cleanliness.
