The terrible deaths of three pupils at Nkwanta Senior High
School in the Oti Region have left the Ministry of Education extremely
heartbroken. The area's resurgence of tribal conflict claimed the lives of the
students. Two female day students lost their lives in a shooting incident on
Thursday, June 26.
A male student was hit by a stray gunshot the next day and
died. All three events took place on school property, which was caught in the
crossfire of growing tensions between Nkwanta's communities. In a statement
issued on Friday, the ministry conveyed its sorrow. It sent sincere condolences
to the families of the departed kids as well as to the Nkwanta SHS faculty,
staff, and students.
The statement expressed sorrow to all those impacted by the
turmoil in the neighborhood and called the bloodshed senseless. Haruna
Iddrisu, the minister of education, personally expressed his sympathies to the
families of the deceased. Additionally, he commended the Acting Regional
Director of Education in the Oti Region and the Ghana Education Service (GES)
for their prompt action in responding to the emergency. In order to safeguard
students and employees, the ministry acted right away.
To maintain safety, Nkwanta SHS was temporarily closed. To
assist students in safely returning home, police escorts were sent out. The
minister gave the GES instructions to keep a careful eye on the situation and
take all required precautions to protect the school's property, employees, and
pupils. The ministry underlined that it hopes the disagreement may be resolved
quickly and amicably. Its goal is for students to quickly return to a secure
learning environment.
The terrible incidents have sparked grave worries about
school safety in conflict-prone areas. When violence breaks out in the
communities around them, educational institutions like Nkwanta SHS are at risk.
Calls for immediate and permanent peace in the Nkwanta region have increased in
response to the event. The ministry's statement emphasizes how important it is
to safeguard schools and make sure they continue to be secure learning
environments. Young lives lost serve as a sobering reminder of the terrible
consequences of tribal conflict.
In order to stop more damage and bring peace back, the
Ministry and the GES are dedicated to collaborating with local authorities.
They want to provide a setting where kids may concentrate on their studies
without feeling threatened. The relatives of the victims and the whole Nkwanta
SHS community are still in deep sorrow over this tragic loss.
