High-street retailers may be having a hard time right now, but one Welsh town appears to be breaking the mold.

Cardigan has been ranked as one of the UK's most beautiful destinations for Christmas shopping.

Little, individual enterprises that conduct brisk business predominate on the high street.

After Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, St Andrews in Scotland, and Frome in Somerset, it came in fourth place on the list.

The newspaper reported: "While some towns get decked out in tacky tinsel, cute Cardigan goes upmarket, with its historic shops painted in a rainbow sherbet yellow, lipstick pink, and spearmint green."

Tonnau Surf Co. is one of the companies mentioned in the story; Ben Robbins, the owner, said the media attention has been a nice boost.

"It's enormous, immediately." I began receiving messages, and all of a sudden you had a large number of social media followers and were receiving some orders as well."Great for exposure, this. To know that Cardigan is just getting better makes me very pleased."

Originally founded as a market booth, Gift Shop U Melt Me has now grown and added a storefront on High Street.

Cardigan's success, according to owner Becky Oldfield, is a result of the town's diverse independent traders.

Located in a historic granary with a view of the Teifi River, The Albion is one of the town's newest establishments.

According to general manager Jack Scott, Cardigan found it "exciting" to be included in the story.

"Even though we've been open for a year, receiving that kind of media attention is incredibly wonderful.

It presents the town with an amazing opportunity. It's been increasing enormously every year for the past five or six years, I believe, and it's amazing to watch the town reach its full potential as a wonderful, lively small town off the coast of west Wales."

The town's Victorian Guildhall Market is now receiving renovations, costing £3.1 million, which include installing new public restrooms, extensive roof and wall repairs, and a new heating system.

The market was established in 1860 and has historically housed a variety of modest market booths. Councillor Clive Davies expects the market will increase the number of tourists in the little market town.

Similar to Cardigan Castle, it draws tourists to the town to explore its legacy and past. In addition to being a great place for new companies to launch, the Guildhall offers something a little bit unique from other towns.
