Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, feels that the team's recent struggles have served as a much-needed reality check.
Guardiola claims it was time to give his treble-winning players and himself a shake because they had been treated "like cats" for too long following their previous triumphs.
In addition to losing, City outperformed against Aston Villa on Wednesday, which caused them to drop to fourth place in the standings and prolong their Premier League winless streak to four games.
During a news conference to promote Sunday's match against Luton, Guardiola stated, "As a manager, I sometimes need that; I need that challenge."
"I believe it is beneficial for everyone. I believe that one must live that way. We've known how good we are and lived like cats for a long time (head strokes). It must state, "Guys, this business is terrible." Even though you are invincible, you can't possibly win a single game—from nothing, dear God. Perhaps I need that challenge to show that I'm a capable manager and to help the players get through that circumstance before I do it for myself. Saying to themselves, "Aston Villa were miles better than all of us, so imagine the other ones," is a terrific challenge for the players.
"We have to work hard because the club and the entire organization know we might miss out on the Champions League the next season. We leave here more quickly once we realize this. It was necessary for the club. I felt that the club needed to be shook up a month ago. The unfavorable outcomes may enable you to live with them.
But Guardiola was quick to deny any talk of complacency in his team, saying that the bar is still very high.
It's not about complacency, he stated. Complacency is showing up late for training, doing poorly, and not caring what happens.
"I'm only referring to subpar outcomes. Poor outcomes aid in understanding. Losing games is an essential thing. Living that way is essential. After that, you advance a step. It's the only path.
Once his most recent suspension is up, Rodri, a key midfield player for City, will return to Kenilworth Road. Guardiola's team has lost all four of the games the Spaniard has missed due to suspension this season.
