A 60-year-old female seller is detained by police after the Kumasi Kejetia market fire
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has detained a 60-year-old female trader in connection with the Kejetia market fire, which destroyed a portion of the establishment and required authorities to shut it down for several days.
Felicia Opoku was arrested as a result of a formal complaint by the Ghana National Fire Service, according to starrfm.com.gh, since she is thought to be the primary cause of the fire breakout.
According to reports, the old woman who sells rubber mats was detained on March 21, 2023, but she has not yet been released on bond.
According to Reuben Ameh, general secretary of the Joint Traders Association at the Kejetia Market, they were planning to see her at the police station where she is being kept.
On March 15, a fire completely destroyed the Kejetia market extension, killing many businesses and the merchandise of traders. The market was shut down until Tuesday, March 21, while the Ghana National Fire Service looked into the situation.
On Monday, Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia paid a visit to the market and stated that, according to the fire department's briefing, the fire was started by a vendor who was cooking in her shop.
"I was shown around, including the area where the incident took place. Out of 8,000 stores, 33 were shops. "I inquired about the cause with the Fire Service and NADMO personnel," he stated.
