Panasonic, the primary battery supplier to Tesla and a significant early investor, has announced plans to erect a mammoth $4 billion battery factory in Kansas to produce packs for the rapidly evolving transition of the auto industry to electric vehicles and trucks.
The planned production facility, which will be located in De Soto, a Kansas City suburb, was announced by Panasonic Energy, a division of Panasonic, a company based in Osaka, Japan, on Wednesday afternoon. When it opens in a few years, it could eventually employ up to 4,000 people. According to Governor Laura Kelly, the project will be one of the biggest battery facilities in the United States and the "greatest private investment in Kansas history."
In a webcast announcing the news, Kelly said, "This project will be transformative for our state's economy, creating a total of 8,000 high-quality jobs."
