Stefano Patuanelli, Italy's agriculture minister, alerted parliamentarians that an unprecedented drought might jeopardize 30% of the nation's agricultural output, imperiling the production of essentials like olive oil, arborio rice, and tomatoes.

According to the most recent official data, Italy lost roughly one-fifth of its water supply between 1991 and 2020 compared to 1921 to 1950, Patuanelli informed the lower house of the Italian parliament.

According to the findings, Italy may lose up to 40% more of its accessible water sources in the ensuing decades, which Patuanelli called a "slow but relentless wasting away of water."

The production of olive oil may decrease by 20% to 30% from last year, according to Kyle Holland, a market analyst with Mintec. He noted that the critically low soil moisture levels may also have an impact on the yields of pears, apricots, and peaches.
