Yesterday, a touching and dramatic sight at a nursing
training college in the center of Accra captivated students. 22-year-old
Abigail Mensah, a final-year nursing student, became the life of the hostel
after her boyfriend, Kwame Asante, planned a romantic surprise that caused
excitement and mayhem.
Students relaxing after lessons were startled when a sleek
black motorcycle sped into the hostel courtyard at twilight on Thursday.
"Abigail Mensah!" yelled the deliveryman, carrying a present box with
a solitary rose and scarlet ribbons wrapped around it. As Abigail, perplexed,
walked forward, her pals buzzing with excitement, curious murmurs filled the
air.
A silver bracelet with the words "Forever Yours"
etched on it and a love note from Kwame, a young Kumasi businessman, were both
shining within the box. Encouraged by her thrilled roommates, Abigail read the
letter out loud: "My beloved Abby, your name is in every beat of my heart.
You are my delight, my strength, and my hope for the future.
This bracelet is a pledge: I'll dance with you in every sunlight and hold your
hand during every rain. Always love, Kwame. Everyone was in awe of the
compassionate comments, with some wiping away tears and others applauding.
When Abigail's phone rang, the surprise intensified since
Kwame had scheduled a live video call for the same time as the delivery. His
happy expression acknowledged that he had spent weeks organizing this to
reconcile their distance from one another. As students took pictures, the
hostel burst into laughs and cries, and the scene went viral on the college's
WhatsApp group.
By nighttime, people were discussing who might match Kwame's gesture as Abigail's romance story spread around the university. "This is loving goals!" said Abigail's roommate, Sarah. In addition to strengthening Abigail and Kwame's relationship, the bracelet and letter served as a reminder to Korle-Bu's pupils that love, when shown with such fervor, can transform a peaceful evening into a celebration for the entire hostel.
