The World Surf League officially recognizes the Apple Watch as official surfing gear, and there is a new app for athletes to use while competing.

The World Surf League declared the Apple Watch to be official gear for the first time in professional sports on Friday. In order to stay updated throughout contests, competitors on the Championship Tour will also have access to a new WSL Surfer app on the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra.

The app gives surfers their scores, wave priority, and remaining time in the heat in real-time sync with the WSL Scoring System. Due to its water resistance, the Apple Watch is a good choice for the job as a wrist-worn device.

"Surfers need critical information while they compete, and the WSL Surfer app we've developed for Apple Watch provides real-time data that will help the communication flow from the WSL Scoring System to the competitors in the water," said Erik Logan, CEO of the World Surf League. "Apple Watch's unique capabilities, ease of use, and incredible water resistance make it the ideal solution to support our surfers competing in the extreme conditions of our worldwide tour."

Before each heat, each contestant will receive an Apple Watch that has the brand-new Surfer app downloaded on it. Prior to the start of the new season in Hawaii on January 29, all athletes will receive training for it. Some athletes have already tested it over the previous two seasons.

Another collaboration between Apple and the WSL is a documentary series that will be available on Apple TV+. A second season of "Make or Break" will premiere on February 17, the firm declared on January 25.

The world's top surfers are seen in "Make or Break" as they battle for the top prize at the Men's and Women's World Surf League Championship Tour. The new season introduces fans to surfing spots all over the world where the competition will be held in 2022.
