Final statement from Messi before leaving Barcelona
Lionel Messi has acknowledged he would have preferred to leave the club in a totally different fashion, making today one of the saddest days ever for Barcelona fans.
Messi and Barcelona reached agreement on the terms of a new contract, but due to restrictions imposed by La Liga's financial fair play, the club was unable to ratify the deal and informed Messi that they could not honor the agreement.
On Sunday, Messi gave a tearful press conference to say goodbye to the club's supporters and teammates before saying his final goodbyes on Instagram.
I would have preferred to depart in a different manner, even though I suppose saying goodbye will never be pleasant. I wished I could have stayed longer, but despite my best efforts, it wasn't to be. I just have gratitude to express to everyone who has supported me at the club for such a long time.
