Demna is responsible for himself.
Balenciaga's creative director apologized on social media after the brand's latest campaign, which included pictures of kids holding what looked to be BDSM-inspired teddy bears, continued to draw criticism.
In the tweet from December 2, Demna stated, "I want to personally apologize for the incorrect aesthetic choice of concept for the gifting campaign with the kids, and I assume my responsibility." "Having children advocate for things that had nothing to do with them was inappropriate."
Despite working with Balenciaga to "provoke thought," the designer stated that he would never purposefully make art that dealt with child abuse.
The 41-year-old stated, "I need to take what I've learned from this, pay attention, and interact with child protection organizations to see how I can contribute and help on this awful subject." I sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt by the imagery, and Balenciaga has promised to take the necessary steps to ensure that similar errors are not repeated in the future and that child safety is protected in every manner possible.
Demna and Cedric's apology follows the fashion house's removal of the pictures from its Instagram account and subsequent release of a statement expressing regret for the pictures. They released a second apology on November 28.
"We strongly oppose child abuse and never intended for it to be a part of our story," the company said in a statement. The two distinct advertising campaigns in question "reflect a number of egregious errors for which Balenciaga accepts responsibility."
