Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are subtly honouring the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex both wore jewellery that had been given to them by the late Queen for the funeral of the late monarch on September 19 (you can watch the services here). Kate accessorised with a four-strand pearl and diamond choker that she has worn on numerous occasions throughout the years, as well as pearl drop earrings.
Kate wore the expensive necklace for the first time in 2017, at the Queen and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary celebrations, and again in 2021, at Prince Philip's burial.
The Japanese government purportedly gave the Queen the choker's pearls as a gift in the 1970s. Throughout her life, the late monarch wore the necklace multiple times, including to Margaret Thatcher's 70th birthday celebration in 1995.
The Hakim of Bahrain gave Queen Elizabeth the earrings as a wedding present. Notably, Princess Diana also wore the earrings and necklace on a number of official occasions, including a state visit to the Netherlands in 1982 with Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
Meghan, like Kate, paid tribute to the Queen by dressing in mourning. She donned a set of diamond and pearl stud earrings for the services that were given to her by the Queen that year. During her one and only joint visit with the Queen in June 2018, Meghan debuted the studs.
Since the Queen passed away on September 8, the royal family has honoured their cherished grandmother in a variety of ways, including by donning mourning attire.
The Queen's favourite three-strand pearl necklace, according to Buckingham Palace, was worn by Kate on September 17 at a banquet for the governors-general of the Commonwealth countries.
The pearls were practically a daily accessory for the Queen, who even wore them in her final portrait, which was unveiled on September 17, the day before her funeral. The picture of the grinning Queen was reportedly taken earlier this year to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee, according to Buckingham Palace.
