According to Airbnb, Jay Carney, the company's global head of policy and communications, is leaving Amazon to work for Airbnb. He is the most senior executive to leave Amazon since Andy Jassy took over as CEO from Jeff Bezos in 2021.
Because of his experience working at "the highest levels of both government and technology," Carney, who most recently held the position of senior vice president of global corporate affairs at Amazon, is the "ideal candidate" to head up policy at Airbnb, according to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky.
Carney began working for Amazon in 2015 after 20 years as a journalist for Time magazine and serving as former President Barack Obama's press secretary from 2011 to 2014. He will start working for Airbnb in September.
Carney will make sure that "as Airbnb grows, we enhance the communities we are in," replacing Chris Lehane, who quit to head a cryptocurrency company in early 2022.
