Your Facebook Marketplace purchases may soon be eligible for DoorDash pickup and delivery. The parent company of Facebook, Meta, reportedly collaborates with DoorDash to transport Marketplace items up to 15 miles away, according to a Wall Street Journal story.
However, not all items are eligible for shipping. According to sources, DoorDash will only deliver products small enough to fit in a car's trunk, and drivers are required to complete deliveries within 48 hours. In either case, it sounds like a useful choice for someone who is unable to pick up an item themselves.
Additionally, it closes a hole in Facebook Marketplace's local delivery options, which currently only allow you to have larger products delivered by a company by the name of Dolly. The US-only service connects you with one or two neighborhood "helpers" who will pack large items like a refrigerator, bookshelf, or air conditioner into a pickup truck and deliver them to your home for a fee. The service is only available in a little over two dozen cities.
In addition to Dolly and DoorDash, Meta enables Marketplace vendors to deliver goods directly to a buyer's address.
It's still unclear how many Marketplace customers can already order deliveries through DoorDash or how much it will cost. The program has been verified by Meta and DoorDash to the WSJ, and they both claim to have already begun testing it in a number of US locations. When contacted for comment, Ali Musa, a DoorDash spokeswoman, declined to provide any additional details, and Meta didn't answer right away.
The agreement, which has reportedly been under consideration since 2021, was announced just months after DoorDash CEO Tony Xu joined Meta's board of directors.
DoorDash has been expanding its delivery service over the past few years to include items other than takeout orders. These include groceries, alcohol, custom gifts, prescriptions, and even COVID-19 test kits. The business signed a contract with Dollar General last year to provide same-day delivery, and it also plans to take its service to Europe.
