POKROVSK, Ukraine (AP) —An 11-year-old child discovered under the debris of a house and a 6-year-old murdered in a car fire next to a train station that was the target were among the 25 people killed in a Russian rocket assault as Ukraine celebrated its independence day, a Ukrainian official said Thursday.

 

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Iskander missiles were fired by Russian forces to hit a military train conveying Ukrainian soldiers and supplies to the combat lines in eastern Ukraine. More than 200 reservists, according to the government, "were destroyed on their route to the fighting zone."

 

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office, declined to clarify whether all 25 casualties of the attack on Wednesday were civilians. According to him, 31 people were hurt overall.

 

Nevertheless, the deadly attack in Chaplyne, a hamlet of approximately 3,500 people in the central Dnipropetrovsk area, served as a horribly painful reminder that Russia's military force is causing suffering to civilians and is testing Ukraine's fortitude after six months of gruelling battle.

 

The period since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into the neighbouring country has been described as "unimaginably horrifying" by U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet in Geneva on Thursday. "Stop armed attacks against Ukraine," she urged Putin.
