With a feature called "upfront pricing," which informs drivers exactly how much they'll be paid for a journey and where they'll end up after picking up a client, Uber claims to have "totally redesigned the way drivers accept rides." The shift, according to the company's release on Friday, is a part of their effort to make driving for the rideshare service more flexible. Uber also intends to launch a service that allows drivers to browse nearby ride requests and choose the trips they'd want to take.

The modifications, which have been tried in a few places, may result in fewer trips being canceled by drivers who don't truly want to travel there or who know that they won't be particularly profitable.

The amount shown to drivers before they accept a trip, according to an upfront fee support document, is based on "several factors, including base fares, estimated trip length and duration, pickup distance, and surge pricing." The document also states that the fare will be adjusted if the rider changes the drop-off address or there is "unexpected traffic" along the route. Additionally, the figure excludes wait times and tips.

When The Verge asked Uber for comment on which US regions wouldn't be receiving upfront fares, they didn't react right away.

Along with transparent prices, Uber says it will more broadly provide the trip radar tool, which provides drivers with a list of nearby ride requests. Drivers can choose the trips they are interested in from the list, and Uber will hire them if it believes they are a suitable fit. Uber also states that drivers will still receive individual ride requests but that they'll have access to trip radar to find "another trip that might work better for them." (According to an article from Uber, it will determine which drivers get their picks based on average wait times for drivers and riders.)

The document does caution that some types of trips may pay drivers less as a result of the move to upfront prices, which is scheduled to take place "to much of the US over the next months." The new system will mean drivers earn more on short trips, trips with lots of traffic, trips where they end up in an area with fewer riders, or trips where they have to travel a long way before getting to the rider, the document states, citing "long and relatively quick (traffic-free) trips" and "trips to high-demand areas" as examples.
