In iOS 16, how can you edit or cancel an iMessage?
Apple; iMessage

Everyone has sent a text message that they later regretted. It can be awkward at best and disastrous at worst to send a text to the wrong person, whether it was a spelling error that your parents would never forgive you for or a message that had the incorrect term ("I don't want to come to the party!" instead of "I want to come to the party!").

With the exception of sending a "I didn't mean that!" message in response, there was nothing you could do about "delete for everyone" on iMessage until now, despite the fact that other messaging applications like Signal, WhatsApp, and Viber all feature some variation of it. Apple added the ability to edit and unsend sent messages to its iMessage chat app in the iOS 16 beta, but there are some restrictions that apply that I'll go over below. (In addition, the recipient must be running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or macOS Ventura for the feature to function.)Click and hold the message.

iMessage

Select "Undo Send" from the drop-down menu.

The message will vanish instantly (in a really attractive "poof").

You had 15 minutes in the initial public beta to cancel your message. However, that has been modified to two minutes if you have loaded the second public beta. The selection will no longer be available in the drop-down menu after two minutes.

Click and hold the message.

Tap Edit in the drop-down menu.

Edit your message and tap the check mark to the right of the message to send the correction. (Or tap the “x” to the left of the message if you’ve changed your mind about changing the text.)

Editing Step

If you want to see all of your edits, tap on the small Edited link below the message. You can then tap on Hide Edits in order to just see the last message.

You have a little more time to edit a message—a full 15 minutes. If you long-press on your message after 15 minutes have passed, then the Edit option will no longer be on the menu. But the second public beta added a new limitation:

In contrast to the first public beta, where you could edit that message as many times as you liked, you can only do so up to five times until the Edit option in the drop-down menu vanishes.

Also a warning that neither choice will function if the recipient is using an earlier OS version (so don't rely on this feature during the open beta). Additionally, you might want to be aware of a few other risks when using this tool. Even so, it can be incredibly useful.

This post was updated to include changes to the OS since it was first published on July 15th, 2022. (specifically, the amount of time you have to unsend a message and the number of times you can edit it).
