About 20,000 cases of typhoid fever were reported in the first half of 2025, causing the Oti Region to see a major rise in the disease.
Residents and Sarfo Nketia, the Municipal Chief
Executive (MCE), have jointly appealed for the construction of a dedicated
hospital in order to address the outbreak and deliver rapid medical attention
in light of the concerning circumstances.
Poor sanitation and tainted water are frequently
associated with typhoid fever, which is caused by Salmonella typhi. More than
five thousand instances have already been reported in the provincial capital,
Dambai. Due to a shortage of potable water, residents are mostly reliant on
contaminated water supplies from the Oti River.
The disease is spreading because of some food sellers'
unsanitary methods and inadequate trash disposal, according to Adom News.
Waterborne infection hazards have been further increased by careless wastewater
disposal and inadequate sanitary infrastructure.
MCE Nketia stated, "We need a dedicated hospital
to ensure our people receive timely care because our health facilities are
overstretched."
Health professionals caution that if immediate action
is not taken, the outbreak may get worse. Sanitation bylaws will be enforced
against violators, and public health campaigns on access to safe water, waste
management, and hygiene are already under way.
Some Dambai locals expressed optimism that the situation would be managed to save lives with assistance from the government and medical organisations.
