Every year, Nigeria reports more than 120,000 new instances of cancer
Over 120,000 new instances of cancer are reported annually in Nigeria, according to a statement made on Saturday by Prof. Usman Aliyu, the director general of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment.
According to Prof. Aliyu, complications from cancer-related deaths claimed the lives of an estimated 78,000 Nigerians in 2020; 44,699 of these deaths were female and 34,200 were male.
This was announced by Aliyu, represented by Hassan Zaggi, at the seventh annual meeting of the Association of Nigerian Health Journalists, which was held in Nasarawa State in cooperation with the World Health Organization.
Given these graphic numbers, NICRAT is committed to collaborating with all pertinent parties to significantly raise awareness of cancer in Nigeria and provide greater access to care and research.
Through the training and retraining of all categories of health workers, we have laid out measures to raise the number of cancer experts in the nation geometrically.
"We just released three strategic documents as part of our dedication and readiness to combat all types of cancer and guarantee individuals who are afflicted have access to the greatest care and assistance available nationwide.
Strategic Plan for Prevention of Cancer of Uterine Cervix 2023-2027, the National Cancer Research Agenda 2024-2027, and the National Strategic Plan for Cancer Control Plan 2023-2027 are the three documents, he said.
He emphasized that the documents' main areas of action cover data and research, supply chain management, governance, preventive measures, and surveillance, all of which are in line with the Ministry of Health's present leadership's goal of enhancing the health of all Nigerians.
