How to Check on Your iPhone a Text Message's Sent Date

The Messages app on the iPhone does not, by default, display the date and time of every message sent and received, only the first message sent and received on any given day. But each message's precise time of transmission is concealed; fortunately, there is a simple technique to display all timestamps exactly.

Methods for Determining the Time a Message Was Sent

Swipe left on the screen and keep holding your finger there to see the precise moment when each message was sent. All of the precise times the messages were delivered are displayed on the right side of the screen while your finger is still pressed on the screen, as illustrated below. The timing is once again concealed when you remove your finger from the screen.

The standard display looks very different. In the screenshot below, you can see that a group of messages has a date and time at the top, but individual messages don't have times.

The most recent message may additionally have a Read message at the bottom with a time (if it is from the current day), a day of the week (if it is from the previous week), or a date (if it is earlier than the previous week).

The iMessage system is used to send text messages between iPhones. The messages your friends or relatives send you if they use a phone other than an iPhone, such as an Android or a Windows phone, will be green, indicating that they are SMS messages rather than iMessage messages. It is not necessary to use iMessage metadata in order to find out when a message was sent; it is possible to do this even with simple SMS.

The secret iMessage time stamp function gives you the facts you need, whether you're a lawyer creating a case for a client or an intrusive buddy developing a case against another acquaintance.
