Apple and YouTube reveal their most recent podcasting developments

More than 100 million people already listen to podcasts on Spotify, but big-tech rivals in that sector are getting ready for their next offensive to compete.

Google revealed yesterday that it would discontinue its Google Podcasts services and concentrate all of its podcasting efforts on YouTube Music.

According to Edison, around 23% of weekly podcast users in the US say YouTube is their most often used service, compared to just 4% for Google Podcasts, as the firm stated in a blog post. "This matches what listeners and podcasters are already doing," the company added.

In the US early this year, podcasts were added to YouTube Music as a non-subscription feature; this feature will soon be available worldwide.

While fighting off the new rivals, Apple has long been the market leader in podcasts. Its most recent step for Apple Podcasts involves partnering with Calm and Lingokids in addition to two of its sibling businesses.

More than 60 new original podcasts are being added, along with archives of previous Apple Music Radio programs. There is a premium component, too, since these podcasts will only be accessible to Calm, Apple News+, Lingokids, and Apple Music users.

More will come; shortly, users will be able to link their Apple Podcast subscriptions to those for newspapers and services like Sleep Cycle, Bloomberg, L'Équipe, The Economist, and the Wall Street Journal.
