Everybody encounters situations where they must quickly send a scanned copy of a document to a colleague or to a government entity that does not accept photos of documents. You won't require a smartphone with a camera and this post's app in 2023.
With the free Microsoft Lens app for Android and iOS, you can use your camera to "scan" documents that you want to save as PDF right away. Before saving, the margins can be changed so that the document looks exactly like one that was created with a scanner.
The same is possible with Notes for iOS users. Make a new note, pick "Scan Documents" from the camera menu, and point the camera at the required document. A convenient feature is that the camera will attempt to instantly adjust the image's frame to the document, saving you from having to alter unneeded portions of the image.
