To compete with MediaTek's Dimensity 9200, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is now available

  • There is now a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 available.
  • Based on 4nm technology, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
  • This year will see the release of devices with Snapdragon 8 "Gen 2."

The majority of 2022's flagships were powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon series semiconductors, and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the company's newest flagship processor. The recently unveiled Dimensity 9200 processor from MediaTek is directly competing with the new chip. The new Snapdragon flagship mobile platform includes hardware-based ray tracing, just like the Dimensity 9200 does.

Specifications and features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Based on TSMC's 4nm node, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has an octa-core architecture. The primary ARM Cortex-X3 with a 3.19GHz clock speed is part of the octa-core architecture. The performance cores consist of two A715 cores and two A710 cores. Three A510R1 cores serve as efficiency cores at the end. Here, the core architecture is different from typical chips in that it is 1+4+3, as opposed to 1+3+4.

The platform pushes for 25% faster graphics rendering on the GPU. Additionally, Dimensity 9200, a set of Snapdragon Elite Gaming Features that seeks to give desktop-level gaming experiences with realistic light, reflections, and illuminations, is the industry standard for real-time, hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

The CPU is said to operate 35% more quickly and consume 40% less power. But rather than the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, all of these comparisons are made with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Additionally, AV1 supports 8K at 60 frames per second. Regarding the ISP, the 18-bit triple cognitive ISPs and an AI-enhanced Always-Sensing camera intelligently improve each Snapdragon Sight experience.

The Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF system with the Qualcomm 5G AI Processor, Qualcomm Smart Transmit, and Qualcomm 5G PowerSave is used by the chip for connectivity. Additionally, the business unveiled the FastConnect 7800, which is planned to allow dual-Bluetooth connectivity as well as low-latency Wi-Fi 7. It offers a Wi-Fi uplink speed of up to 5.8 GB/s and a latency of less than 2 ms.

Last but not least, the chipmaker has also confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-equipped devices will be released by the end of 2022. Companies like Red Magic, Honor, ZTE, Xiaomi, Meizu, Vivo, Sony, Redmi, OPPO, Nubia, Motorola, OnePlus, Sharp, Asus, and iQOO will debut devices using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, according to Qualcomm.

Oppo states that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be used in its upcoming Find X handset

At the Snapdragon Summit 2022, OPPO also used the stage to announce a partnership with Qualcomm Technologies to develop ray-tracing graphics for mobile devices. The company claims to be the first smartphone maker to offer an open-sourced mobile ray tracing solution and that it will carry out software optimizations based on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform.

These improvements, which will be made in conjunction with Qualcomm, will make it possible to use OPPO's ray tracing technology on mobile devices for intricate, expansive game scenes. Additionally, OPPO has revealed that its upcoming Find X flagship devices will feature the most recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, as it is a long-standing partner of Qualcomm Technologies.
