Chippa United FC, a top-flight South African team, sent their sympathies to the deceased academy graduate's family, friends, and coworkers.
According to The Herald, Chesley Jaftha was slain in a suspected hit on Friday morning. He was with a companion at the time, who was unharmed.
The 23-year-old was a recent graduate of the team's academy as well as a trainee for the senior team and a player for Chippa's feeder team, Peace Makers FC.
Everyone at the club is profoundly grieved to learn of the demise of Chesley Jaftha, our former goalie for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge and feeder teams, at the young age of 23.

No one has been taken into custody in relation to the killing of Jaftha.
The killing of the young goalkeeper brings to mind Senzo Meyiwa's 2014 home invasion-related shooting tragedy, which left him dead.
