Is there anything worse than picking up your dependable Canon EOS R5 and finding out it's actually a cunning Transformer? Unfortunately, a partnership between Takara Tomy, the Japanese business behind the Transformers toys, and Canon, the Japanese corporation behind... well, you get the point, will make this nightmare future that TFormers foresaw a reality starting in 2019.

A pair of Transformers figures that can fold into surprisingly lifelike-looking Canon mirrorless cameras are the product of the partnership. Because I initially thought these were working cameras, I think that they are "surprisingly realistic." However, as their price of 19,800 (about $147) makes clear, these are only reproductions that are only 80% the size of the original. (The possibility that this could be a working camera isn't too far-fetched given that Takara Tomy has previously created Transformer toys that include working MP3 players.)

My favorite component in both cases is the lens cap, which the Transformers may use as a shield. The delightfully ludicrous inclusion of the little cameras that both figurines appear to be clutching in several of the promotional photos comes in a close second. The Decepticon Refraktor figurine is one, while Optimus Prime is the other.

Preorders for both Transformers, which will be available in Japan on February 25 of next year, are currently being accepted through September 28, according to TFW2005. They may or may not see a worldwide release.
