Twitter stated on Friday that a security flaw might have allowed a malicious actor to discover the account names linked to specific email addresses and phone numbers (and yes, it could have included your secret celebrity stan accounts). After receiving a report through its bug bounty programme, Twitter initially patched the problem in January. However, a hacker was able to take advantage of the vulnerability before Twitter was even made aware of it.

The flaw, which was caused by a code update the platform made in June 2021, was not discovered until early this year. Although Twitter said it "had no information to imply someone had taken advantage of the vulnerability" at the time of its discovery, this gave hackers many months to exploit the flaw.

In contrast, a study published by Bleeping Computer last month claimed that a hacker was able to take advantage of the flaw while it went unnoticed by Twitter. By taking advantage of the vulnerability, the hacker reportedly amassed a database of more than 5.4 million accounts. He then attempted to sell the data for $30,000 on a hacker forum. After examining the information that was posted to the forum, Twitter acknowledged that its user data had been hacked.

The precise number of users who have been impacted is still unknown, and Twitter doesn't appear to be aware either. Despite stating that it will notify impacted users, Twitter claims it is "unable to confirm every account that was potentially impacted." Anyone worried about their hidden accounts is advised by Twitter to use two-factor authentication and add a private email address or phone number to the account they don't want to be linked with.
