Here is how the new battery percentage indication for iOS 16 should have appeared
Apple; Here is how the new battery percentage indication for iOS 16 should have appeared |
In the most recent beta of iOS 16, Apple returned the battery percentage indication to the status bar, and as my colleague Victoria Song reported, it is abhorrent. Normally, I don't pay attention to battery percentages, but the new one looks to be inherently flawed. One particularly aggravating problem, as Victoria pointed out, is that the icon's "battery" is always full regardless of what the percentage indicates, which makes the indicator more difficult to understand.
Having said that, I've seen a mockup that follows the new design for the battery percentage indicator but is much easier to scan. Check this out from The Browser Company's engineering manager, Brian Michel:
This design, in my opinion, is much simpler to comprehend in a hurry, which is what I want when immediately checking to see how long I can go without a charge. I adore how the battery fills up to show how much actual tank juice is left. Additionally, I think it looks interesting how the numbers change from white to black when the metre crosses over them.
Let's hope Apple uses this concept as inspiration and makes some adjustments before the public release of iOS 16 this fall.
