The problematic dating was based on the fact that it could allude to this age through its "artistic traits."
In 1857, an "Inventory stele" was discovered in Egypt, on which the Egyptians in stone stated that Cheops had just rebuilt the broken statue and had no involvement in its building.
In the twentieth century, R. Schoch, an American geologist, showed that the vertical erosion scars on the Sphinx were caused by rain.
However, it hadn't rained in Egypt in at least 8,000 years.
The Egyptian government began restoring the Sphinx shortly after Schoch's publication.
The monument's lower two-thirds are now complete.
